Some of the web based tools are very simple to use and require no extra equipment. They can be used by both teachers and students. All of these tools are free.

1. vocaroo.com - needs no registration but does require a microphone. plug in the mic, record your message then listen to your message to see if it sounds right.
Click on "Post to the Internet". A code will pop-up below. Copy the code (higlight>copy)
Go to the webpage on which you want the recording to appear. On this page while editing, click on "widget" and "other HTML". Paste the code into the box and save. Save the page; listen to the recording.

2. voki.com - voki is a bit more complex and can be done with or without a microphone. A voki can be made without registering but it will not be saved. If you register, you will have a library of your creations.

Created without registration

Voki from my "Library".

Other voice recordings include blabberize.com You register, can create a talking creature - adding the mouth can be tricky. You can upload photos to make them personal.

voicethread.com is another voice recording site. You do need to register. You or a student can upload a PowerPoint and add slide by slide commentary to it. Images can also be uploaded. A group can comment on the image. The PowerPoint was created by a second grade student with my narration. Comments can be added in a number of ways. Microphone is easiest.

My favorite tool is prezi.com. Prezi is a registration site and allows for a lot of creativity. They can be very simple or very complex.

I have two other favs: wordle.net and animoto.com With wordle, you produce "word clouds" and with animoto, videos from pictures (or video clips) Both are free. No sign in for wordle and no saving (unless you do it yourself). Animoto free version is registered and the shows are limited to 30 sec. There is an educator free version that allows unlimited shows. The two videos on the home page are animotos.tagxedo.com also produces word cluds. These sclouds can be saved to your computer, shared on another site or printed. They also can be created in various shapes including individually created shapes.
